COOLING DOWN AT MASATAMI SHAVE ICE

A couple of months ago, on a hot, sweltering day, I asked my followers on twitter to name their favorite dessert or dessert places.. Particularly something that would help beat the heat. I got a lot of fantastic suggestions.. from recipes, ice cream parlors and simple ice candy recipes..

One of my favorite Mommy bloggers, My Mom Friday, mentioned one of her favorite spots for a great dessert.. "Masatami Shave Ice". She was very specific about what I should try.. The Swiss Cheese Flavored Shaved IceRina is a lover of all things cheese, so it immediately got her attention.

A few weekends later, when the heat was once again becoming unbearable, Rina reminded me that we hadn't tried Masatami yet. The thought of Shaved Ice in my mouth in the midst of the heat wave was too good to resist, so we decided to go to Robinsons Galleria for the day.

Masatami Shave Ice in Galleria is very easy to find. Just go to the basement level, where the grocery is. It's right in front of one of the entrances to the grocery.. The one in front of Jollibee, to be exact.

SHAVE ICE

Rina couldn't decide which one she wanted between the Chocolate and Swiss Cheese.. So she chose both. Since its only actually P60, the damage isn't exactly a big deal, especially considering the portion size.

I really like the texture of Masatami's shaved ice. It has a certain smoothness to it that lets the iciness slide down your tongue without resistance.

The chocolate was quite delicious, but borderline dark (for my standards) and I prefer milk chocolate. It also came with sprinkles of Peanut in it.. In hindsight, I think it would have tasted better just plain, or with rice crispies instead.

One thing I must say that I liked about Masatami, was how they had the foresight to customize their cups to prevent your shave ice spilling on your shirt (which always seems to happen to me for some strange reason).

If you've ever dropped by My Mom Friday's Blog's section on Food, it's clear that this woman knows what good food is. That's why her recommendation of Swiss Cheese was right on the money. This is something that Rina went absolutely nuts over. It had the light sharpness of cheese but also a milky, creaminess that caused Rina's eyes to roll to the back of her head.

No Joke, a few weeks later, I had to bring my mom to try it, and she loved it as well.

As Rina and I finished up the remainder of our Flavored Shave Ice, a customer came in and ordered something that.. The moment I saw it.. I KNEW I couldn't write about Masatami without including it in my blog!

I told the nice lady behind the counter give me the exact same thing she had just given her last customer. She got a large cup and started filling up the cup with Shaved Ice.. And when I say filled up, I mean she filled it up to Bob Ross Afro like proportions (If you don't know who Bob Ross is, you're missed out on a happy little show.. I loved that guy!).

She then began to paint the ice with different syrups, all of vibrant colors.. She started off with Blueberry, followed by Strawberry, then finished it off with Pineapple.

Just when I thought she was done creating the Mount Everest of Snow Cones, she then topped it off with what seemed to be a thick cream sauce.

The result? Was Masatami's delicious, Hawaiian Shave Ice. In all honesty, the flavors of the Blueberry, Pineapple and Strawberry had already melded all together so I couldn't really get a grasp on how each syrup tasted.. All I know was that it was amazingly refreshing, and despite how it may look, I didn't find it too overly sweet... Why?

The cream sauce they put on top, is what they call "Snow Cap", and its taste was similar to condensed milk. With all the fruity flavors in the ice, the Snow Cap helped temper the sweetness of all the different flavors and bring it all together..

If you've got a low tolerance to sweetness, you might not wanna get this.

This was supposed to come with Azuki Beans as well, but we decided to go beanless.

With very reasonable prices and absolutely delicious shave ice treats, Masatami Shave Ice is without a doubt, a dessert place you should try!
