BEST FOOD FORWARD PART II: THE SWEETEST THINGS!

Because of all the main courses we loaded up on throughout the days we were at Best Food Forward (see here), Dessert became more or less an after thought for me. I won't deny that I'm more of a carnivore anyway, so if there's room in my tummy for a little sweets, then that's a bonus.

But For Rina on the other hand, desserts are a must. And its a good thing, too.. because if it wasn't for her, I wouldn't have tried this little pies you see above.

These, my friends, are what you call "Crack Pies".

And it's one of the best things I've ever put inside my mouth.

Don't let the sprinkling of Confectioner's sugar around the plate scare you. No pharmaceuticals were used in making these pastries. However, you can't help but think that the name "Crack Pie" Perfectly describes these little bites of heaven, created by "The Red Hot Oven". The husband and wife team of Vanessa and Jason Ledesma (Vanessa does the baking while Jason, as he describes it, "Pushes the Crack") teamed up to bring Popular NY Restaurant Momufuku's signature dessert to our shores.

I've never tried Momofuku's original incarnation but it would be hard for me to believe that it tastes much better than what Red Hot Oven has created.. Because this was phenomenal. The Crack Pie easily vaulted itself into one of the best desserts I've ever had in my entire life! The oat crust had a nice buttery toastiness to it that kept the filling in place whenever Rina and I would take a bite. But the filling was where the magic would happen. It was creamy, and gooey, and never falls the victim of becoming too sweet.

I went to Best Food Forward two days in a row, and I ordered some Crack Pies BOTH days.

Though she was too stuffed to eat anymore, Rina passed by Little Miss OC's Kitchen and found their creations so adorable! Apart from the Angry Birds theme that's becoming common, they also have a line that features "designer bags" on top of the cupcake. The attention to detail that went into each little candy bag is nothing short of remarkable!

My brother went around looking for something to take home to my mom. He ended up buying a Strawberry Shortcake from the dessert station, "Cinq", which I noticed seemed to be the most refined among all the dessert vendors at Best Food Forward. After looking at his purchase though, he realized he couldn't wait to give it to my mom to take a bite from it.

He ended up bring my mom home a couple of yemas instead.

I had seen Chef Anna of My Pink Wasabi at her booth in passing, but she was always in the middle of entertaining her customers that I never got a chance to say hello and get some Kashi Makis. I told Rina that before we went home on Sunday afternoon, we needed to pass by. And it's a good thing we did because I bought the LAST set of Kashi Makis!

It didn't have the flavors I hadn't tried yet, but i needed to satisfy my Kashi Maki fix so I took it anyway before someone else did.

I managed to bump into the stunning Jeni Hernandez who was having lunch with her husband and a couple of friends. We met a few years back when we were both in the "Biz" (I was more behind the scenes, obviously hehe) and I was amazed with how even more gorgeous she's gotten over the years!

I'm thankful to her because she's one of my friends that followed my blog when I was getting 10 people a day visiting it (She was probably around number 8) hehe, and she admitted that she saw my tweet about Best Food Forward, and it got her intrigued to check it out. (haha kilig)

            Nice seeing you again Jeni!

              For my next post..
I'll introduce you to two inspiring little ladies that will leave you amazed!

  8. Oh man! I knew with all the great food at Best food forward, we are bound to miss a lot of things. Despite going there for two straight days even though it's quite far from our place, we failed to try those crack pies. =( Hope I get a chance to try them sometime. Here's our share for the bff =D http://www.tsinoyfoodies.com/2012/03/best-food-forward-our-first-visit-at.html
